JR Rapier: Blodeuwedd (Print)
12” x 12” Print
This skull belongs to a barred owl. Blodeuwedd is a Welsh goddess whose face was made
of flowers. The turn of events in her own infidelity against her husband came with punishment
of magicians turning her into an owl. In her new form she mourns the loss of love and reminds us that our relationships are fragile, and our beauty is only skin deep.
Get to Know the Austin Artist: JR Rapier
In this series of work I have strayed into the land of myth for my own personal enjoyment.
My work as a whole has evolved from objects of nature with little life, to these same subjects
with life represented in floral, birds and butterflies; I am now at play by painting what is left of
the dead, their found skulls, and adorning them with personalities of gods and goddesses. I have a deep respect for the animals that live in our neighborhoods and surroundings, and therefore, I am glorifying their beings by transforming them into the powerful deities we once worshipped, and some of us still hold in high regards. In today’s modern world, it’s incredibly interesting and fun to see these creatures that creep through the night, and cross our dangerous roads as gods and goddesses shape shifting into our mortal world.
